Introduction
Spam are unwanted calls – which include nuisance callers, telemarketers, phishing calls, and illegal and spoofed robocalls.
Spoofing is the act of disguising a communication from an unknown source as being from a known, trusted source. This includes masking the caller's phone number with a genuine phone number of an unknowing 3rd party.
Types of spam calls
Robocall | Robocalls are automated calls that deliver recorded messages. They can be telemarketing pitches or messages with the aim to extract personal information |
Telemarketing calls | Telemarketers attempt to sell products or services, often to an uninterested or unwilling audience. |
Phishing Calls | Scammers use phishing calls to trick individuals into revealing personal information, such as Social Security numbers or financial details. |
Nuisance calls | The same caller calling back multiple times |
Prevention
Unfortunately, Delacon has limited capabilities to prevent spam calls from reaching your Delacon numbers as we cannot identify unwanted calls and robo-callers before they reach our systems.
Our upstream carriers have measures in place to filter out some spam calls and more legislation is being introduced to tackle Spam calls on carrier level.
The Do-Not-Call-Register can prevent unsolicited calls from telemarketers. You can add your Delacon numbers to the register as part of your business.
Mitigation
Below Delacon features can assist in mitigating the volume of spam callers that eventually reach your phone operators.
Delacon Feature | How it works | Best against |
Call Recording | Enabling call recording will activate an automated message at the beginning of the call, alerting the caller that the call will be recorded. By recording your calls, potential scammers and telemarketers might be deterred. | Telemarketers, Scam calls |
Call Block | Once a caller ID (phone number) has been identified as being associated with unwanted calls, you can use Delacon's Call Block Feature to block a number from calling your services. However, please note that Spam callers rarely use the same caller ID for long, therefore blocking a specific phone number might only have limited effect. | Nuisance callers |
IVR | The IVR feature (Interactive Voice Recognition) requires the caller to make an active menu selection before the call connects to an operator. With this feature enabled, any robocalls will not reach a person. Scammers might also be deterred as they are less likely to go through the effort of navigating through an IVR. | Automated Messages, Spam callers, Robocalls |
Welcome message | Similarly to the IVR and call recording, a welcome message can help filter out robocalls and automated messages. For the caller, the call will connect when the welcome message plays, starting their auto-message. By the time the call connects to an operator, the message might be over. It can also deter other types of Spam callers. | Automated messages |
Examples:
1. An international travel company received a high number of Spam calls to their phone number. They addressed the issue by introducing a welcome message that prompted the caller to press an option on their keypad in order to be connected to a phone operator.
Reporting
While above features can help relieve the impact of Spam callers on your phone operators, calls will still appear in your Delacon reporting and trigger a call notification email for a missed call.
Incoming calls from a blocked Caller ID will appear in the Delacon reporting with a blank duration and the answer status as "busy". These calls will not trigger a call notification email.
